With the announcement yesterday that Allen Iverson was once again a Sixer, ticket orders started coming through as fans scrambled to purchase Philadelphia 76ers tickets.
Oh, and the new A.I. #3 jersey you were wondering about? It will be available in the Fan Gear store at the Wachovia Center on Monday night, which just so happens to be when Iverson will be wearing it for the first time when the Sixers face off against Denver.
The Denver game is not yet sold out, but it’s getting there. In fact, the Sixers say they are “filling tickets at a pretty quick pace for all of the games next week.” The Sixers face another of Iverson’s former teams, the Pistons, on Wednesday and the Rockets on Friday.
How long that enthusiasm will last is hard to say. It’s expected that Iverson would stimulate a renewed interest in the team, which has struggled on the floor and attendance, averaging 11,965 per game – 29th in the 30-team league. But the Sixers would ultimately have to win again to sustain that fan interest.
Sixers president and general manager Ed Stefanski said yesterday that winning and not just attendance remained his focus. He said that with the broken jaw suffered by guard Lou Williams, Iverson was attractive because he was someone who “can play right away for us.”
“If it means that we start playing better basketball and win and bring fans in, that’s great,” said Stefanski. “But in order to sustain any kind of attendance in the building, you’ve got to win basketball games. We were aware of that. That’s the reason we brought Allen in, too, to win basketball games.”
